Free To Be You

I was having an interesting conversation with a group of girls during supper the other night, and we were basically talking about how sometimes not everybody around you will appreciate you for who you are. And that is a normal thing, you won’t be friends with everybody that you come across and sometimes we forget this. We want to be liked so much, we want to be part of a group, and we want to belong somewhere. This is a normal human desire, we were wired for connection and intimacy but sometimes we allow this desire to have power over us. What do I mean by this?

Well, I think that the worst thing that could happen would be to change yourself in order to fit in with a group of people or with one person. Having to change yourself in order to fit in is a full time job. You always have to be mindful of what you’re saying, what you’re wearing and how you’re acting. But you’ll find that you’ve been through such a horrible experience that you’ve decided that being yourself is no longer the way in which you should live life. You’re going to be the total opposite, because good guys finish last, because your kindness was taken for granted, or because good girls go bad anyways.

Well, here’s a piece of advice. The people that caused you to bring the change, the people that have hurt you will eventually leave your life, if they haven’t already. But you have to live with yourself for the rest of your life. So you need to decide what your identity is based on, what is your anchor? Do you even have one, or is who you are based on what others think and say about you?

The amazing thing about basing your identity on God’s Word is that His Word never changes. This means that your identity is as grounded, as stable, and as unchangeable as His Word. If you're looking to shift your identity from being based on people, to being based on God's Word, I want you to do the following:

Every morning stand in front of the mirror and say the below verses out loud. The more you do this, you allow the truth to fill your mind and your heart. Continue doing this for as long as you need. You are loved by God, flaws and all. Be free to be you.
